An Early Settler

A cabinet card by an un-named photographer

The reverse of this cabinet card is inscribed with the name John Soper Butcher, which may indicate the name of the gentleman pictured.

John Soper Butcher was born in England about 1830 and arrived in New Zealand about 1872.
Two children were born in New Zealand, Walter Edward Harold Butcher about 1878 and Claud Wilfrid Butcher about 1880. John Soper Butcher died at Strathmore Hospital, Christchurch on 9 September 1902 aged 72 years. He was buried in Linwood Cemetery on 11 September 1902, block 14, plot 25. His wife Mary Augusta Butcher died in 1906.

  1. This photograph is that of John Soper Butcher, my husband's gt. grandfather. John was a very well known piano tuner in Christchurch & further afield. His brother Claud however, died in infancy.We had seen this photograph in a couple of books but do not have a copy of it.

      Nice photos.
      But wasn't it John's son WEH Butcher who was the piano tuner, rather than John himself? And so was HV Butcher, son of WEH. MEV
